An aspiring actor uses mental projection to obtain guidance and help from an expert
Our Silva sales consultant Dennis Higgins was encouraged by friends to try out for a local little theater production a few years ago when he was living in Corpus Christi, Texas. "They kept begging me to come down and audition for the part of Tebia in Fiddler on the Roof," he said, "so on the last night of auditions I showed up."
But he was extremely nervous. "My throat was so tight that I could barely speak," he recalled. "So I went off by myself and went to my level to relax and figure out what to do."
He decided to call on an expert for some advice. He imagined that the actor Topol, who had done a magnificent job of playing the part of Tebia, was right there with him.
"First I worked a case on Topol," Dennis said. "I checked to see if he had any health
problems, or any other kind of problems, that needed to be corrected. This was my way of getting permission to consult with him, of feeling that I had the right to ask him to help me.
"After working his case, I asked Topol what he would do to prepare for the audition," Dennis related. "In my mind, I heard this big laugh. Topol told me that he wouldn't do anything to prepare, that he knew the part and how it should be played, and that he had certainly had enough experience that he could just get up there, become the character, and get the job done.
"He gave me his point of view," Dennis explained. "This was wonderful; now I knew how a great actor would approach the part."
Dennis felt that he was being guided to just get up and let his natural enthusiasm and skill at motivating people take over and guide him.
The results?
"When I finished singing If I were a rich man, everyone applauded," Dennis beamed.
"Two other people who had come to audition for the part got up and left!
"And everybody loved my performance. There were people who had seen the best
professional actors play the part, and told me that I was just as good as they were, that I had nailed the part.
"All of this came about because I knew how to enter my level, the creative dimension, and seek guidance from somebody who knew exactly how to help me."
